Peace Signs Launch – Antenna Studios

On the 17th November 2018, I arrived at the slightly shabby but atmospheric venue, Antenna Studios in Gypsy Hill situated at the dead-end of a labyrinth of South London back streets for the launch of Peace Signs. This is the long-awaited project of Keiron Phelan Flutist and the other half of State River Widening.

 I had to negotiate the rickety outdoor staircase to reach The Gallery Room where the gig was taking place, Musician, Maiden blogger and part-time accountant Katie English greeted me at the front desk. Always good to see a friendly face.

A plethora of musicians were brought together for the evening’s performance by maestro Keiron Phelan. The evening began with James Stringer performing classical virtuosos including the incredible Mad Rush by Phillip Glass on the resident baby grand piano. Followed by the moody modern folk of Oliver Cherer preempting the main performance of Peace Signs a sweet blend of ‘70s tinged folk-pop. Accompanied by Jack Hayter on his homemade pedal steel, backing singer Pam Berry and the talented clarinetist Jenny Brand. 

One of the highlights of the evening was a solo performance from Yorks own ‘Ziggy Heroe’ the alter ego of Michael Warren and star of Harland Millers 80’s novel Slow Down Arthur Stick to Thirty. Suave, sophisticated and sharply dressed the reclusive crooner is known for his personal interpretation of Bowie’s music sang classics from his one-time release including the haunting Neon Light.

Keiron a long time fan swore 18 years ago to make his acquaintance and is now producing his long-awaited new recording.

The Peace Signs launch was a convivial night of good company, beautiful music with an atmosphere of bonhomie.
